Accessibility

Previously UofT required 3% of classroom spaces to be designated accessible. This produced too many spaces in large halls - the emphasis now is on quality rather than quantity. Use Ontario Building Code minimums for # of spaces (see PDF).

Accessible spaces vary in type. A 5'x3' space is required as a 'designated area' - not including aisle passage space. In small rooms this typically includes a loose table, preferably height adjustable. In large halls with fixed tables this typically includes a height adjustable table (separate from the main body of fixed tables). In tablet-arm halls this may simply be an open 3x5' space, or it may have a section of fixed table (like in SF 1105) or a height-adjustable table. Accessible spaces may be at the back (SF1105) or front (MS3153) depending on room access. Ideally there is wheelchair access both to the front and back of the room (as in the Bahen halls), with accessible spaces at both.

It should be noted that accessible spaces are used in a large variety of ways that do not include wheelchairs and scooters. Persons with muscular problems may require special seating, persons may require standing position for lectures - any variety of furniture, space or equipment may be required. For this reason the ideal space is fairly big (3x5'), with power outlets close at hand and has either adjustable furniture at the location or made available through the University.
